3 Self Defense Definitions That You Must Understand and Use to Be a Real Expert

Have you ever been around someone who knew that you studied martial arts or took self defense? If you have, then you've almost certainly run into the person who wants you to "show them something."

Some students who lack a broad range of self defense knowledge and experience, as well as those who are unclear as to why they are learning what they are - or even those who just train to be able to show off their skills to others...

...have a difficult time with this type of situation.

An expert who hears this request almost never honors it. He or she knows that to "show them something" is to give away one of your "secrets" that can then be used against you - either by that person, or by someone who was watching from a distance and gathering information.

Here are the 3 definitions that you must understand to be even remotely considered as a self defense expert. These definitions point to areas or aspects of self defense that show that you think outside of the obvious and aren't limited to just the physical "tricks" and skills that everyone else limits themselves to.

Strategies - These are the plans, principles and concepts that will guide you through a self defense situation. In my own program, they include the 8 phases of self defense, the 5 phases of physical self defense action, and the 4 self defense modes - each one capable of helping us to control, avoid, or survive the situation at hand.

Tactics - Most people cannot see beyond the techniques and skills of their particular "style" or program. And yet, within each of these "things" there is a host of lessons being taught that are not dependent or limited to just that one technique - but, instead, are universal and can be applied as-needed. An example of this is the blading or profiling of your body against your assailant's own body to make it as difficult as possible for him to get at you.

Techniques - And, of course these are the skills, such as punching, kicking, joint locks, and the like that can be applied to the attacker's body to stop him from doing what he is attempting to do to you.
To be a real self defense expert or martial arts master, you must know more than "how to fight." Because, in the long run, what you do in a self defense situation, must protect you from not only the assailant's attacks, but also the unseen factors like the legal system. And, being able to do more than physical fighting techniques, allows you to control so much more than someone who can't.
