The Best Two Self Defense Tactics You Already Know

Self defense instructors hear some variant on this question all the time: "Of all the self defense tactics you know, which one is the most effective?" Extensive research into hundreds of answers from hundreds of instructors have led to two self defense tactics that cropped up over and over again. Both appear in almost every self defense syllabus from street fighting to military self defense manuals to Jeet Kune Do and even some schools of Aikido. Both of them are somewhat obvious once you hear them, but things you might not actually do unless you know how effective they can be.

The Number One Self Defense Tactic Worldwide: Let The Eyes Have It!

It's that simple. Attack the eyes. There are such a wide variety of ways to do it, it's silly to try to break down the list -- but the reasons to try it are profound. One of the editors of Blackbelt Magazine likes to refer to the eyes as "the off button", because simply touching one eye creates such a strong reaction on the part of the target that it causes massive openings for all forms of attack. The result is almost always a fight that ends in an immediate and brutal fashion.

Of all of the various eye attack techniques out there, one deserves special mention. Body mechanics experts have examined the movements required to perform more than two hundred different strikes, and have concluded that this attack is structurally one of the fastest that the human body is capable of performing. It's called "the backhand slap".

Yep. Without tensing your hand (i.e. let your fingers remain slightly bent), aim a slightly downward backhanded slap at your enemy's face with the middle knuckles of your index and middle fingers aimed at the eye socket. The natural curve of your fingers will carry those knuckles right past the eyebrow ridge and the cheek ridge, and they will slam into the eyeball with a startling amount of force. The result is always a massive flinch and several seconds of blinking -- and often, tearing up or reflexively closing the eye for a second or more as well. That's plenty of time to follow up that rapid attack with whatever other self defense tactics you can execute.

Number Two of the Self Defense Tactics In The World: Stop Running!

Everyone always says that the best way to defend yourself is to get away from your attacker. That's very true, but they go on to imply that 'getting away' means 'running away' -- and that's a lot less true. Think about it -- if you're actually being chased by a criminal, you're likely not as good at running has he is. He's spent years running from cops, other criminals, and victims who happened to be armed with 'military self defense tools' (i.e. a 9mm handgun). You probably haven't.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't start running, though. Apply the attack to the eyes, and start running; start running earnestly. You never know, you might get away. But if you don't, it's time to engage in the second of our self defense tactics: the duck and tuck. You have to be brave to do this, but it's worth it. Simply wait until your pursuer is right on top of you, literally about to grab you, and veer right, then immediately fall left. Your opponent will trip over you and fall on his face -- his momentum and his lean forward to grab you guarantee it.

Then, pop up, give him a hard kick in the head or stomp on the knee, and start running again. Your escape is virtually assured; even if he can get up and give chase, the likelihood that he would after getting eye slapped, tripped, and stomped on is pretty slim. He's a predator of opportunity, after all.

And it's that simple -- two schoolyard tricks you've probably either used or had used on you, resurrected in adult life because they work so well. The two self defense tactics agreed upon by hundreds of self defense instructors as 'the most effective' -- relearn them, and hope you never have to use them.

Should Self "Defense" Ever Go On The OFFENSIVE ... Or Are You Limited Only To REACTING?

Self defense comes in many different forms. From the Karate Gi to military fatigues or biker boots, self defense styles and philosophies wear many labels and uniforms. And depending upon the form it takes, self defense can be considered an art, a science, a sport, or a combination of all three.

In reality, self defense is a broad brush used to paint the connecting dots between hundreds of different branches of fighting styles and techniques. And what distinguishes self defense from aggressive combat is sometimes difficult or impossible to pinpoint, because within each confrontation there are many miniature battles and contests. When you're protecting yourself...THAT is self defense. And sometimes attacking an opponent with proactive aggressive tactics is realistic self defense, even if it takes the form of an offensive assault.

Ultimately, pure self defense is designed to protect us from an attack, so it is essentially a system of counter-attacks or reactions to force. But if someone throws a punch and we block it with enough force, we might break their arm, making self defense rather violent...even in the eyes of the court.

How many times do we hear about a court case involving a killing that was done in self defense? The legal system defines self defense with a narrow interpretation, and since those who practice self defense are often subjected to legal scrutiny, it is a good idea to study your local laws at the same time that you study martial arts or another form of self defense training.

What you learn from attorneys might save you in court. And staying out of jail is at least as important in terms of true self defense as a Bruce Lee jab.

The Matrix: Path of Neo

The Matrix: Path of Neo will follow the story of the blockbuster motion picture trilogy The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions and for the first time allow gamers to play as Neo and become "the One."

From the moment the game begins, how the situations play out, how they handle them, how they deal with the events, where they go, how people react to them -- it's all up to the gamer. They may win where Neo failed or find another way to solve the problem -- the path is now theirs to follow.

As Neo, the choices the player makes to resolve each scenario and the resulting consequences may have a different result than the original films. Alternative scenarios filled with new characters, content and storylines have all been written and planned by the Wachowski Brothers to expand the Matrix universe and overall gaming experience.

Once again blurring the lines between Hollywood and interactive entertainment, The Matrix: Path of Neo features the likenesses of all of the films' key actors -- including Keanu Reeves (Neo), Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus), Carrie-Ann Moss (Trinity), Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) and Jada Pinkett-Smith (Niobe).

Are You Trying To Learn Self Defense? Here Are 5 Tips To Make Sure You're Training Is Street-Ready!

Are you serious about wanting to learn self defense - the kind of skills that will allow you to escape from an attacker who really wants to beat, break, or kill you? Effective street self-defense training is very different from what is typically being offered by the average martial arts, karate, or self defense class at the YMCA though.

Unfortunately, many students who get involved in martial arts or self protection classes with the intention to learn self defense, only end up being disappointed. They find out very quickly that what they are learning is either lessons for winning a trophy in a sporting contest loaded with rules, or...

...half-baked ideas from someone with absolutely no real-world self-defense experience whatsoever!

The problem with most self defense programs is that they focus almost entirely on technique, and not enough on teaching the student how to assess, control, and choose best options for specific encounters. If you are serious about developing skills that will allow you to survive a street attack, then you must learn self defense skills that go about step-by-step mechanics.

Here is a list of 5 considerations that your training must address for your self defense training system to be "street-ready," and worth the time, effort, and money that your pouring into it:

1) The techniques are based on defending against modern attacks and attackers - not 16th century Chinese, Japanese, or Korean warriors! You must make sure that you're self defense system is teaching you how to handle and survive against the most probable attacks that would be thrown at you TODAY - not hundreds of years ago!

2) Training is not limited to "classroom" or dojo ('martial arts training hall') study. Chances are that you're not going to be in a wide open space, in loose-fitting clothes and bare-feet when an angry, aggressive, or criminal attacker decides to jump on you!

3) Training assumes that you will be the under-dog, and not the superior fighter. No matter how much skill and ability you have, you must assume that when an attacker chooses you, that he or she already has the advantage - whether it be in size, strength, speed, ability, weapons, or allies that you don't know about!

4) Everything you do must at least consider the laws governing self-defense. If not, you may find yourself locked up instead of your attacker - charged with assault or murder - because you went too far!

5) Training must be "situational." You should be learning "options." You do not know who your attacker(s) will be, what the attack will look like, or where you will be, so you must train to handle as many situational contexts as possible!

Contrary to popular belief, or the sales messages being hyped up by so-called gurus online who are offering to teach you the ONE single move that will devastate any attacker - any time, the reality is that...

Effective self defense requires more than just a few "karate moves." It involves the ability to think strategically, and understand how to defend yourself with as little wear-and-tear on you as possible.

Martial Arts - Krav Maga

Many martial arts focus on one range of fighting and some of the more diverse martial arts may incorporate two ranges of fighting. The ultimate goal of any martial art is to instil both the skills and the confidence in its students in order for them to be able to defend themselves in a real life situation. No other martial art does this as effectively as the Israeli system of defensive tactics knows as Krav Maga. Krav Maga which is a martial art that incorporates all ranges of fighting was created in Israel in the year 1948 by a man named Imi Lichtenfeld.

During the time period that Krav Maga was created, the Israelis were still under British rule and had to find a way to defend themselves, without bearing arms. In its infancy this martial art was one of the most brutal hand to hand combat systems as it was created to train the military for World War II as well as training the Israeli civilians for anti-terrorism defense. In 1964 Imi Lichtenfeld retired as a soldier and started to adapt the martial art for normal every day use for civilians. The association of Krav Maga was created in 1975 by Imi Lichtenfeld and his most accomplished students.

The advantage Krav Maga has over other martial arts is that not only is it extremely adaptable, it is also constantly evolving. Whatever real world scenarios that may occur, Krav Maga finds realistic defenses for them. Most martial arts (especially traditional ones) tend to teach rigid curriculums that aren't up for discussion or change while Krav Maga encourages its students to find creative ways to use the techniques and even incorporates new lessons learned from real life encounters. Krav Maga is not a sport! It is a complete fighting system that was created for street attacks. There are no rules and students are taught to use anything in their arsenal to be able to defend themselves. This would include pressure points and vulnerable areas such as the eyes, temples, throat, back of the neck and groin. This martial art focuses on training its students in a repetitious manner as they hope to instil the instincts needed to survive a street attack. Cardiovascular and callisthenic training is incorporated into each training session, as being physically fit is a necessity. The focus of this art is to counter hard and fast. The faster you can attack your opponent the better your chances of surprising them. Most martial arts have both specialized weapons defense and training while Krav Maga teaches its students to use everyday ordinary objects as weapons. The point is how often does a person get attacked in the streets and have a set of nun chucks or a staff to defend themselves with?

When a martial art teaches you to both throw and defend against punches and kicks, teaches you joint locks and ground defense, as well as takedowns and weapons training, it is hard for anyone to use any other words then "complete system" to describe it. The world we're living in is getting progressively more dangerous and many of the traditional martial arts, while great for exercise and pleasure, are not used to such extreme conditions. Krav Maga should be the martial art of choice for anyone looking for a highly effective system to defend themselves.
